West coast weekend

The “west” showed up this weekend, with a WESTERN GREBE, Saturday the 1st at Rocky River Park (4th Cuyahoga County record, first since 1991) and a 2nd cycle CALIFORNIA GULL amidst a mega flock of mergansers and gulls off of Edgewater State Park on Sunday the 2nd. Upwards of 25,000 gulls are staging between Edgewater and Wendy Park, with 2,500 Bonaparte’s still making appearances on days with the right winds.

Not a Horned Grebe.

Freeze-frame siskins.

Second cycle California (left, under adult Ring-billed). Essentially looked like a first year but mantle was dark gray. Below: A Lesser Black-backed Gull (first year) doing a jaeger impression.
