Point blank Purple Sandpipers

Jerry Talkington’s incredible series of Purple Sandpipers on the breakwall at Headlands Beach State Park this past weekend. Between 1 and 3 birds routinely encountered. This absolutely stellar bird is rare but regular November-December along the Lake Erie coast. Harbor breakwalls, shorelines with rock and detritus debris and jetties are best. HBSP has routinely been the best spot in Ohio for this species, with Lorain Harbor’s west breakwall a close second, and Cleveland’s outer breakwall likely best but hardly visible unless you find yourself on a boat.

This bizarre shorebird is a rock-lover. Where the water laps onto flat mossy rocks, seek this orange-legged beaut.
