A beautiful comparison between adult male and female Red-breasted and Common Mergansers, courtesy once again of Chuck Slusarczyk, taken at Lorain Harbor today, the 28th. The comparison between the female Common and Red-breasted is brilliant: the female Common is centered in the frame, with a great comparison of Red-breasted to the upper right. Female Commons show a rich, dark chestnut head, with high-contrast white throat, and clear demarcation between chestnut-red head and gray neck. Female Red-breasted Mergs show far less contrast, with a dingier, lighter, more orange head, and dusky demarcation between head and gray breast/neck.
